International Medical University (IMU)
The International Medical University (IMU) is a private international medical university in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It offers courses such as Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing as well as postgraduate studies. The university maintains relationships with a total of 26 partner universities offering twinning programmes with many universities worldwide, including universities in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The History
The International Medical University started off as International Medical College (IMC) in April, 1992 and was based in Petaling Jaya until 1999. It was also the first private medical institution of the country. The college was given university status in 1999 by the Malaysian Ministry of Education.
Since 1999 the University’s growth and development has been in developing clinical schools in Seremban and Batu Pahat, own Honours degree courses in Pharmacy and Nursing, and in establishing research as a core activity, together with development of postgraduate research Masters and PhD programmes.
The IMU Clinical School in Seremban took in its first cohort of 46 students in September 1999.
In February 2008, the University started the dentistry programme, which gives students an opportunity to either complete the whole degree in Malaysia or in the Partner Dental Schools overseas. Five other programmes, Medical Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Psychology, Nutrition and Dietetics as well as Pharmaceutical Chemistry started in July 2008.
In 2009, the University introduced a new programme Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons), a programme targeted solely for registered nurses to upgrade their qualification from diploma level to a degree level. Another undergraduate programme commenced in February 2010 was the chiropractic programme, the first of its kind and only complete educational programme in Malaysia as well as in all of Southeast Asia.
Also, in the same year, the university has gained approval from Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to offer an undergraduate programme in Chinese Medicine, scheduled to take in the first cohort in February 2011.
The Campus
IMU's Bukit Jalil campus was the former headquarters of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, known as Plaza Komanwel. The University bought the building and began operation in the campus when it was given university status in 1999. The campus has recently completed its renovation, which included the building of a new 4-storey annexe block connected to the main building.
IMU also owns three clinical schools in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan and Batu Pahat, Johor. In addition to this, the IMU has multiple learning clinics and hospitals; all of which are government-based.
Currently, the IMU is to be claimed as the best private medical university in Malaysia. It is one of the top amongst private universities in Malaysia.

IMU Healthcare
In July, 2010, the IMU has opened its own Specialist, Dental and Chiropractic Clinic in the Annexe Block of IMU Bukit Jalil campus.
Student activities
The Malaysia National Sports Complex is just located behind the IMU Bukit Jalil campus; hence the University offers a variety of societies and sports clubs.
Student Accommodation
Vista Komanwel Condominiums, which is 5-minutes walk away from IMU, serve as the natural choice of accommodation for IMU students.
